PLDT Rebrands, Drops “Long Distance Telephone”

Effective April 12, information communications technology heavyweight PLDT will be striking out the words “long distance telephone” and be known as PLDT Inc. In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), PLDT Inc. said the move was approved by its board of directors. However, the change of name still needs the approval by its shareholders and the Securities and Exchange Commission. The current corporate name has been associated with the traditional traditional fixed line telecommunications business for several decades. The shift to the internet-based business has resulted in the decline of the company’s legacy businesses, such as voice and text messages. PLDT chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manuel Pangilinan said the company will focus on data as it is going to be the major growth driver of the company. He said the whole organization has been trained to adapt to the new business model. Furthermore, he said PLDT will experience vital adjustments in its revenue mix and earnings before taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).  Furthermore, measuring profitability levels will use a new baseline starting next year.   To contact the freelance contributor or reporter on this story: [email protected]   WhatsUpBGC.com partners with freelance reporters and contributors for business, lifestyle and sports news and features.  They can be contacted directly for inquiries about the stories published on this platform....
